Optimisation of Ankle Foot Orthosis design
The overall aim of this program of work is to transform the arbitrary process for prescribing and designing rigid Ankle-Foot Orthoses (AFOs) into a scientific, standardised methodology that maximises clinical and cost-effectiveness.
To accomplish this, we will collaborate with clinicians, technicians, managers, and AFO users to co-create guidelines for optimal AFO design. This co-creation process will be informed by an unprecedented overview of current clinical practices across the NHS and novel quantitative assessments of optimum AFO design parameters. The objectives of this work include: Mapping variability in current AFO prescription, design, and manufacturing practices; Quantifying the effects of design parameters on mechanical properties linked to AFO effectiveness; and co-creating guidelines for ideal AFO design.
The project deliverables will enable the development of standardised AFO prescription and form the basis for international best-practice guidelines to ensure optimal patient outcomes. This project will also generate the first quantitative data on how AFO design impacts rigidity and identify ways to maximize rigidity without increasing weight or cost. Unique methods for computer modelling and biomechanical AFO assessment will be developed. Successful completion will enable further investment to translate these research methods into a clinical tool for optimizing AFO design.
